When you wake up in the morning, do you notice more hairs on your pillowcase or hairbrush? There is a difference between hair loss, and hair shedding. In this article we will go over the differences, as well as what is considered normal hair shedding.

It is normal to shed around 50-100 hairs a day and when the number begins to rise higher, you may have excessive hair shedding. This can be contributed to several factors that include:

  • High stress levels.
  • Hormone changes (recently having a child).
  • High fever or overcoming a recent illness.
  • Losing or gaining weight.

The Difference Between Normal Hair Shedding & Hair Loss

Hair loss is typically a gradual change and occurs when something, such as hormones, stress, or genetics to name a few, makes the hair stop growing. This would be hard to ignore, since you would notice more hair falling than usual, and the only way to revere this is to find the cause and address it. Other reasons for Normal Hair Shedding include autoimmune diseases (alopecia in particular), scalp infections, hormonal imbalance, and improper diet.

Hair shedding is different from hair loss due to the fact that it is usually temporary and quite dramatic in how much hair is falling. In this situation, your hair cycle has more than likely reset and many follicles end up being in the shedding or resting phase at one time, making it seem like something more serious at work. Other causes for hair shedding may be due to lack of enough iron in your diet, hyperthyroidism, a recent bout of bad fever or sickness, or it is a hereditary trait.

While you may notice a decrease in volume or thickness during this time, there is a way you can determine if the shedding is due to hair phase changing, or hair loss. To do this, monitor the thinning areas and notice if any hair is growing back – this will usually take a few months after the shedding stops and you should be able to see some regrowth.

If you do not see any change or regrowth, then you may be experiencing Normal Hair Shedding. If this is the case, do not panic. You are among a large percentage of the population that experiences hair loss and there are treatments for it.
